Many of the best inventions are borne out of necessity. That's how Catherine Betts got into the sports bra business. As an athlete, she developed debilitating neck problems from ill-fitting sports bras and high intensity workouts. There had to be a better solution! Inspired by a neuroscience course, she designed and modified hundreds of prototypes that have culminated in her Betts Fit brand. Here's what she had to say recently.

What motivated you to start Betts Fit?

I developed the Bounce Free bra out of necessity and knowing that other women must share a similar problem. As a size 34F and a former Division 1 soccer player and personal trainer, I used to wear three sports bras – yes three! – to control the bounce.

What has been the most challenging thing about getting your business up and running?

Awareness and capital! It is harder than ever to market a product today with little financial resources. During the COVID & algorithm era, gorilla marketing is impossible and online marketing is extremely competitive. We have had to work hard to think of creative and inexpensive ways to spread the word about Betts Fit.

Why did you decide to join TheWMarketplace?

I love the mission and everything the Wmarketplace stands for! I have personally struggled to find a one stop shop for women owned brands. So excited it finally exists and that Betts Fit gets to be a part of it.

What has been the most exciting or rewarding part of owning your own business?

The most rewarding part has been receiving stories from our customers who are able to run pain free for the first time in their life. Few things in this world make me happier than to hear I am making a difference in someone’s life.

What kind of items or mementos on your desk inspire you each day?

Every month I use my whiteboard to set an intention or focus. This month is "Simplify & Succeed." Last month was "Trust your intuition" and the month before was "Take time for you." I wait until it comes to me. It is always quite obvious what is calling me each month, and I go with whatever that is.
